on-the-ground workshops in jewish justice
WELCOME TO FREEDOM CITY
Welcome to Freedom City, on-the-ground workshops in Jewish justice, for the teens of The Kitchen. We’re creating this experience for our young adults to put Torah into practice and bring real freedom to San Francisco.
Each year of this 2-year cycle, we’ll meet monthly on Monday afternoons at Glide Memorial Church for a service-workshop. We begin each workshop by serving dinner to Glide clients. Then we’ll have our own dinner and hangout time. Our night will finish with us exploring a different topic, based on your questions about justice, Torah, identity, racism, anti-Semitism, whiteness, privilege, poverty, or whatever else is on your mind. We’ll learn with a mix of awesome teachers and justice-doers: R. Noa Kushner, R. Jessica Kate Meyer, R. Tarlan Rabizadeh, R. Michael Lezak, Joel Abramovitz, and some world-changing awesome Glide staff.
In February of the second year** we’ll head to Montgomery, Alabama for a Justice Pilgrimage to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice to confront the racism and inequity in American first hand. When we get back to San Francisco we’ll figure out what we can do about it, right in our backyard.
Our inaugural group of 8th and 9th graders** will have a strong hand in building this experience - so come with questions about the injustice, racism, oppression you see around you.
**ARE YOU A 10TH-12TH GRADER?
**We are developing a special 1-year track for rising 10th-12th graders, that includes monthly dinner service at Glide and the Justice Pilgrimage to Alabama in February, 2020. This is a unique opportunity for older teens and we’d love you to be a part of it. Please be in direct contact with Joel for more information and to sign up.
